There are a number of different New Zealand services that provide information, help and support for people wanting to quit smoking.
Face to Face
There are many face-to-face quitting services you can choose from.
- Health Centres and local GPs
Your local health centre or GP can provide you with support and advice to help you quit.
- Aukati KaiPaipa
The Aukati KaiPaipa programme provides one-on-one counselling to help people quit smoking. Although developed for Māori women and their whānau, it is open to all.
- Find a Local Service
There are many different services available including specialised services for Pacific and Asian smokers in some areas. Find out where your local services are at the Cancer Society's Quit Smoking website or the Smokefree contacts map.
Telephone
- Quitline
The Quitline is a free quit smoking telephone help line. Callers can request a quit pack – either by phone or via the website – which has practical quit smoking advice and information. They can talk to a Quit Advisor for one-on-one support or register to receive subsidised nicotine lozenges, patches or gum where suitable. - Txt2Quit
Sign up for Txt2Quit and get TXT message support sent straight to your mobile. Getting TXT messages can help keep your motivation up and give you some advice and support along the way as you quit.
- Stub It
Stub It is an innovative quitting programme being trialled. The programme uses video messaging. There is no cost for joining or downloading the video clips.
Online
- Quit Online
The Quit Group has an information-packed website offering support and factual information, plus access to subsidised nicotine lozenges, patches and gum. It also features the free Quitblog allowing people to connect with others going through the same experiences. See www.quit.org.nz.
- Smokestop
Smokestop is a three-month online programme consisting of a series of sessions, each lasting 10-15 minutes. By following through the sessions you will be fully prepared for quit day, and have effective strategies to stay smokefree. Smokestop provides essential support throughout your journey to become smokefree including email, SMS text messages, live chat and a forum.
- Nicorette's Active Stop
This online programme is available to those people using Nicorette. You need a New Zealand registered mobile number and email address.
