Turanga Administrator

The Centre for Tobacco Control Research is part of the University of Auckland's School of Population Health at the Tamaki Innovation Campus and is committed to working with others to reduce smoking prevalence in New Zealand. The Centre conducts research to identify the most effective interventions to reduce harm from tobacco, aims to strengthen tobacco control research expertise particularly in Māori and Pacific communities and supports the implementation of the tobacco control research strategy.

We now require an Administration Star to join the team. Reporting to the Centre Director, you will provide excellent administration support to the Director and Coordinator of the study. Your main responsibilities will include general secretarial work such as organising meetings, assisting with minute taking, processing casual staff agreements and compiling expense claim forms. You will also assist with maintenance of the Turanga website, which involves updating information and assisting with the communication to various external customers.

It is expected that you will have solid administration experience coupled with strong customer service attitude. If you have previous experience working with websites/social media and have fluency in te reo me nga tikanga Māori or a Pacific language/culture, this will put you well ahead of the competition. An excellent team player, you will have good organisation and communication skills, and be able to work independently whilst assisting the team to achieve set milestones.

Tobacco Control Researcher

Stanton Glantz, Professor of Medicine and Director of the UC San Francisco Center for Tobacco Control Research and Education is seeking an individual interested in conducting a broad range of research projects related to tobacco control. These include:

  1. State and local policymaking process as it relates to tobacco control. The project involves preparing detailed case studies on tobacco policy making in different states, including research on the development and passage (or defeat) of state and local tobacco control legislation, funding and management of tobacco control programs, efforts of public health advocates to promote public health programs, and opposition to tobacco control by the tobacco industry and its allies and surrogates
  2. Influence of the tobacco industry on the scientific process, particularly as it relates to efforts to regulate secondhand smoke and cigarette design
  3. Statistical and economic analysis of tobacco control programs and related issues. Data collection will involve researching written records, analyzing campaign contribution information, conducting interviews and doing field research.

Strong analytical and writing skills are important. This position is for one to three years and suitable for an individual with a political science, public health, legal, statistical, economic, or relevant life sciences background who is looking to gain research experience as a postdoctoral fellow or on the way to further career development, such as going on to graduate, medical, or law school. Individuals at all levels may apply. Salary $41,116 or higher (postdoctoral, depending on years postdoctoral), $34,680 (bachelorsÂ’ degree), $36,984 (MastersÂ’ degree), plus benefits.

Leadership training for Māori in Public Health: 2012

This training programme will introduce a variety of key themes and concepts relating to Māori health and development to encourage greater leadership amongst Māori working in public health.

This eight-day programme consists of four 2-day noho Marae spread over a 4-month period. Programme sessions are intended to stimulate learning, discussion, debate and action. The sessions will utilise a wide range of teaching styles and small group projects will also be undertaken.

Participants will be expected to cover their own travel costs and koha to the marae as applicable. Accommodation, meals and all course materials will be covered by the course convenors.

The 2012 dates are:

  • 16-17 Feb
  • 29-30 March
  • 3-4 May
  • 21-22 June.
